To counter the novel and intensified risks associated with GenAI deployment, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) pioneered a critical set of guardrails. As GenAI capabilities become integrated into nearly every business function, organizations face two major, intertwined problems, explosive unapproved usage and exacerbated risk vectors. Data suggests that a significant percentage of employees utilize GenAI tools without formal approval or oversight. This shadow AI activity bypasses standard security, privacy, and intellectual property (IP) checks, exposing the enterprise to unquantified liabilities. While the overarching NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) addresses general AI risks, GenAI introduces or amplifies specific issues. Model Hallucination which includes generating confidently false or misleading information. Data poisoning & IP theft that produces risks from training data sources and the model's output potentially infringing on copyrighted material. Erosion of Trust generates outputs that are biased, unfair, or used for malicious purposes (e.g., deepfakes).The complexity of these risks demanded a dedicated and prescriptive control mechanism that existing governance structures could not adequately provide. In response to this urgent need, NIST, drawing on extensive input from its public working group, developed the initial public draft of the AI Risk Management Profile for GenAI (NIST AI 600-1). This trailblazing document serves as a specialized overlay to the foundational NIST AI RMF. The core objective of the GenAI Profile is to define and categorize the unique risks presented by large language models (LLMs) and other GenAI systems. More importantly, it provides a structured set of actions and controls tailored to mitigate these identified risks. The profile is engineered to shift the focus of governance from broad, high-level policy to actionable risk management specifically at the point of deployment—the use case level. NIST’s AI RMF GenAI Profile represents a monumental step toward establishing trust and safety in the rapidly evolving Generative AI ecosystem. For any enterprise aiming to harvest the competitive advantages of GenAI, compliance and operational adherence to these controls are not optional. The successful implementation of this framework—achieved through contextual, use-case-level governance and automated guardrails—is the pathway to mitigating shadow AI, managing novel risks, and ultimately making AI trust a core competitive advantage.
